Local AI chat

Your hardware powers the AI.

Local AI means your own device does the work. FreeWeights loads free open-source language models in your browser so you can chat without sending each message to a paid AI service.

Plain English

What local AI means

Instead of sending every message to company servers, FreeWeights runs the model inside your browser on your own device. The technical term is local inference, but the idea is simple: your hardware generates the reply.

Choosing models

Smaller models are easier to run

Modern open-source language models now rival the performance of state-of-the-art models from just a few years ago. That means there’s no need to pay for the latest and greatest, if your use case doesn’t require the most powerful models.

Phones and older laptops should start with smaller models. Apple Silicon and other GPUs with dedicated VRAM can usually handle larger models.
